Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Johnstown, Pennsylvania!
Reaching out with its catchy "The Flood’s Over" come visit soon message, Pennsylvania’s Johnstown -- home of the famed 1889 Johnstown Flood -- now promotes itself as The Friendly City instead of The Flood City. Little wonder, given the rolling, green region’s $150-million annual tourism revenues tied to attractions and other enticements. Founded in 1800, Johnstown -- about 70 miles east of Pittsburgh -- got its early boost via modernized mills producing tons of steel for railroads, warships, bridges and plain old nails. Europeans began streaming into the U.S. by 1870, providing a labor force allowing Johnstown to become the nation’s largest steel making center, forging many industry advances including the Bessemer process. Then on May 31, 1889, Johnstown made headlines when a devastating 35-foot high wall of water flooded the region, taking 2,200 lives. Two more floods followed in 1936 and 1977, underscoring the city's identity as "The Flood City." Among best known attractions are the Johnstown Flood Museum, featuring three floors of exhibits detailing despair followed by rekindled spirit, and the Johnstown Flood National Memorial, at the South Fork Dam, now featuring a "debris wall." Also at the museum is the Academy Award-winning film The Johnstown Flood by Charles Guggenheim.
For year-around enjoyment, the Johnstown region boasts an array of arts and cultural opportunities, from Jazz on the River to Opera, the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, the River City Brass Band, and summer productions by the Band of Brothers Shakespeare Co. For outdoors enthusiasts, Johnstown’s Cambria County attracts all ages hoping to make the big catch at numerous lake and streams for pike, bass, walleye and muskellunge. Chest Creek is ranked by many as the region’s best for trout. Cambria County also has a fall hunting season for whitetail deer and bear, rabbit, squirrel and turkey, where sports enthusiasts utilize bow, muzzle loader, or traps. Annual events include the Friendly City Polka Fest, with the nation’s top Slovenian and Polish bands, the FolkFest, and the Thunder in the Valley Motorcycle Rally, among the fastest-growing rallies in the eastern U.S. Each August, the All-American Amateur Baseball Association Tournament unfolds on fields throughout Cambia County as pro scouts look for star talent. Including properties near the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center downtown, the Cambria County War Memorial Arena nearby, and the Conference Center at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, Greater Johnstown lodging options range from motels and hotels to bed and breakfasts and resorts.
